FOLD-FORMING FOR SCULPTORS, JEWELERS AND BLACKSMITHS
December 3–6, 2015 (Thursday–Sunday, 9:30am–4:30pm)
• Some basic blacksmithing technique experience recommended
Foldforming for Blacksmiths
Learn how to modify and interpret jewelers’ foldforming techniques in larger scale, using blacksmith and steel fabrication techniques. We will
develop a variety of folded forms in 1/16 - 3/16 mild steel plate. Design pattern layout is essentially the same for fold forming in non-ferrous metals
but heavier thicknesses and larger steel objects often require high working temperatures and the specialized tools used by blacksmiths.  We will be
working in teams for some of the fold openings. Students should have some experience with blacksmithing technique and completely understand
the etiquette and safety requirements used in the blacksmith studio. Hands on participation.

How is foldforming of interest to the blacksmith or sculptor? Ira Sherman, who has explored the topic extensively in his own work, says
foldforming brings two new qualities that are unique and useful for the blacksmith or sculptor: structure and aesthetics.

Almost all foldforms become very structurally strong hollow forms. Most of these forms have a folded or expanded edge that naturally becomes a
structurally strong object with a curvilinear aesthetic. Foldformed structures in steel can be welded or tapped directly into the sculpture or forged
piece. This introduces an entirely a new 3-D design component to the work. It provides another way to achieve dimensionality that expresses the
organic movement of iron. A sculptor making use of foldformed shapes in their work will immediately acquire a new "pallet" of inspirational shell
structures.

Many ornamental and structural objects can be created in their own right when foldforming in plate steel. Unlike basic blacksmith technique,
foldforming steel can be done with hot, semi-hot or even cold mild steel. Traditional blacksmith techniques such as upsetting, fullering, drifting,
hot texturing and chasing can further develop an iron foldformed structure. The possibilities of working iron as a folded form are limited only by
one’s imagination.

Ira Sherman has been exploring the boundaries of metal fabrication and design since the early
1970s, both as a highly successful custom goldsmith and jeweler, and as an internationally
recognized sculptor. His works include body armor and mechanically articulated works. His use of foldforming in iron is startlingly original, and
the workshop is an opportunity to push your own working vocabulary with unusual techniques in iron.

Ira Sherman is pleased to announce four upcoming exhibitions featuring his newest collections of
"Hardcore Chastity Couture” and two workshop events.  He will be posting more detailed information and
images about these shows in the following weeks.

The first,
Green is the New Black Fashion Show,  in Aspen/Carbondale, CO March 15th, 16th and
17th:
Local and national designers and artists come together to create a dynamic, alluring, and thought-
provoking event featuring fashion that sparks the imagination.......Ira Sherman’s  Hardcore Chastity
Couture presents
“A Veiled Proposal” at this year's 11th Annual Green is the New Black Fashion
Extravaganza in Carbondale, Colorado.  Sherman’s runaway models wear steel fashions that become a
brilliant response to the #metoo movement and rape culture.  The armored anti-rape fashions are
complex and intriguing exoskeletal sculpture which confronts the complex issues of sexual objectification,
rape, and freedom of expression.  Four elegant "Armored Headdresses" will be featured in Sherman’s
fashion line,  These wearable sculptures are authentic "Chastity Belts" fabricated from forged steel with
textured  gem encrusted  bronze plate and fitted with steel mesh protection draping over the head and
throughout the body.  This exposé of kinetic sculpture includes pneumatic mechanized features
enhancing  Sherman's draconian response to #metoo and rape culture.

(Note: This will be the unveiling of Sherman’s newest works that will be available for formal viewing at the
one man exhibition entitled “Ira Sherman: Hardcore Chastity Couture” at Bitfactory Gallery, Denver, CO
July 16th - August 8th.)

The second,
"Ira Sherman: Hardcore Chastity Couture" (One man exhibition) at Bitfactory Gallery,
Denver, CO July 19th - August 8th :
BitFactory Gallery Owner Bill Thomason is pleased to present the first comprehensive collection of
recent works in a one-man exhibition of metal sculpture by veteran Denver artist Ira Sherman.  This will
be the first time a comprehensive collection of Sherman’s works have ever been exhibited in Denver.
This astounding collection of 14 elegant, beautifully crafted, wearable forged steel “chastity belts”  is a
brilliant draconian response to the evolving #metoo cultural revolution.  These dystopic anti-rape
fashions are also complex and intriguing kinetic exoskeletal sculpture.  Sherman has presented his
collection of Chastity Couture at Runway Venues throughout the United States.

The third,
“Blurring the Line: Form, Function, and Design” at the Aravada Center for the Arts,
Arvada, CO June 6th - August 25th:
This exhibition hopes to highlight the blurred distinction between art, design, and function by featuring:
fashion, wearables, jewelry, furniture, lighting, housewares, and everything in between.  Sherman’s
kinetic stainless steel “Chaperone”: sculpture will be a highlight of this exhibition. The third,

JEWELRY GOLD CASTING WORKSHOP
Mendocino Arts Center
,  November, 2019
Precision Jewelry Casting and Mold Making Techniques for the Studio Artist:
This intensive three-day jewelry casting workshop will focus on techniques that produce porosity free
gold and silver jewelry castings with extreme detail.   Casting demonstrations will use sterling silver and
casting bronze, however,  the technique will be very specific to 14K and 18K gold castings.   All
techniques will be adapted for use in an artist studio environment.   Students will learn basic techniques
for wax model carving, model sprewing, investment, and burnout techniques, ingot pouring,  simple RTV
mold-making plus many tricks of the trade. Ira will also reveal and demonstrate a proprietary mesh
casting technique he developed in the 90s of which one of these pieces is included in the Permanent
Collection of the Smithsonian Renwick Gallery

HOT METAL FORGING FOR JEWELERS AND METALSMITHS
Boulder Metalsmithing Association
 Saturday, December 14 & 15, 2019
Class Description
Copper, silver, brass, and gold can be successfully forged while working the metal red hot. Hot forged
metals will forge quickly and don't need to be repeatedly annealed. Hot forging allows the metalsmith to
forge large billets of metal allowing larger and more dynamic forged design elements.
Students will learn how to alloy and pour sterling silver ingots. We'll forge the poured ingots into square
billets and forge the billets into a variety of predetermined designs using a variety of hot metal forging

techniques. The forged elements made in this class can be directly integrated into future jewelry or
sculpture designs.
